The first SMS message was sent over the Vodafone GSM network in the United Kingdom on 3 December 1992, from Neil Papworth of Sema Group (now Airwide Solutions) using a personal computer to Richard Jarvis of Vodafone using an Orbitel 901 handset. The text of the message was "Merry Christmas".

I was going to guess 1988 without looking it up. I think I sent my first somewhere around 2000/2001. How about you's?

Answer: '92 was the first text message SENT to a cell phone (from a PC). '93 was the first text sent from cell to cell.

I have to say that I was suprised by the '92/'93 timeframe..

To answer Perno - I would say I sent my first one around 2000 (give or take a year). I remember the company I worked for in '99 was a heavy user of the text-to-pager service and was quickly adopted for cell phones. I think I started heavily using it personally when Verizon started the unlimited texting plans. Verizon had no clue what was about to hit them..
